Homesick / Tone Clusters Two one-act plays by Joyce Carol Oates. In the first, Homesick, Mr. America (a murderer) and Pinktoes (his victim) exchance monologues. I struggled to figure out how to isolate Pinktoes while still allowing her to be lit throughout her (fairly extensive) blocking.

In Tone Clusters a mysterious Voice intereviews the parents of Carl Gulick, who is accused of murdering the neighbor\'s child. The lighting was very straightforward, but there was an awful lot of technology to fus with: Five tvs, an LCD projector, a video camera, three computers.

The sounds design made heavy use of tone clusters, which were new to me.

Look, I'm a reasonable murderer...
Look, I
I think I really managed to make him seem open and straightforward here (at least, in comparison) while still retaining dark, sinster shadowing.

My favorite cue, though I admit that it lacks subtlety. This is the high-water mark for Mr. A, he's never more powerful then he is here.

Pinktoes
Pinktoes didn't get to have very much light during this production. She's dead, you see.

My favorite photo of Pinktoes. Her downlight? R51--"Surprise Pink".

Matt's Beautiful Set
Matt
This was the set for Tone Clusters. For Homesick, everything was covered in dirty canvas. Five televisions and a 6' x 8' projection screen.
Carl Gulick, age 4

Sadly, the two other large TVs are blocked in these pictures. The one TV displayed the same feed as the central screen (except when that screen was displaying video) and the other TVs got a signal from a second laptop.

Note the two little TVs under the platform. They also displayed images of Carl, &c.

Throughout a lot of this production, the Gulicks were projected, as well. The camera was set to a slightly low framerate, creating a jarring delay effect in the projection.
