2008-04-30 Assassin's Creed

I don't really have time to write this here, but I just got this amazing game and I wanted to tell y'all about it... I might not provide much background info, though, 'cause I should be spending my time more wisely. Therefore, as is always the case while you are using the internet, you can find more information about what I'm talking about here.

In a nutshell, this is a ... more->

2008-04-23 Dr. Who: Voyage of the Damned

It's been four months already, surely I can write a blog post with spoilers for a Christmas special?

The Bad News: Everybody falls into the furnace and dies. Not exactly uplifting in any way, and not even terribly well done. "You're not falling, Astrid, you're flying"?!?!!?

The Good News: I'm so sick of them subtly implying that the Doctor is some sort of all-powerful god figure all the time. Finally, they have made it explicit that he is Jesus Christ the Savior:

2008-04-21 Confusing Food Metaphors!

I might start dating this really cool person--gosh I hope so, but it's not really the sort of thing I want to go into detail about in this format, so you'll have to remain ignorant. She's awesome, but it might not work out. In addition, it looks like I'll design Provision Theatre's production of Smoke on the Mountain this week (RAIN==true?pour():doNotPour())!

Anyway, so this is just a quick note to say how m... more->

Just thought I'd direct your attention to this awesome short story: "I am boss".

It's a pity their commenting is broken, I was going to say,

This is fantastic, and I thank you for it. It is precisely the sort of story I love--it provides enough detail so that I know what's going on, and don't feel lost, and yet it refrains from spelling out every last piece. I want to know about the Doombridge Project and the Secret... more->

2008-04-10 Damn. Hooray!

So, I had just more or less psyched myself up for this experiment involving exposure therapy for arachnophobes--they measure your brainwaves as they fix you. Of course, getting "fixed" involves playing with live spiders, which is why it took me three months just to contact them about the study, and was starting to look forward to it. The study pays $100, but the money was not enough to get me anywhere near the room that might have the spider in it.

2008-04-09 TV, Gender, Robots, Rambling...

I watched most of the first episode of The Sarah Connor Chronicles at the gym this morning, and it seems to be worth watching more. I was really worried at first*, but I think I'll like the show. For one thing, it doesn't flinch (at least in the pilot) from showing that Sarah Connor is totally batshit crazy. She isn't wrong about the killer robots from the future, but she is pretty clearly nuts (in an interesting, self-destructive, ruining her child's life sort of way, not a che... more->

2008-04-09 Knock on wood...

Cabinet of Wonders, a great 'blog in general, has an especially good essy up about OCD, ritual, and mindfulness.

For me, ritualistic actions occupy a rather curious space in my life. On a spiritual level, they represent the sort of submission to a higher power that I reject--I try to avoid saying "Thank god!" or "Oh my god, please let the Cubs win" or whatever. Of course, this refusal to do a perfectly normal and completely meaningless action (there's no god to receive my thanks, after all, so there's no danger of submitting to anything) is an irrational, superstition on its own.

2008-04-03 Possible Reasons for Current Good Mood

I've been feeling quite low of late, especially in the mornings--biking to work lately, I've ranged from general, "Man, nothing's going right" to full blown "I'm wasting my life and all I have to show for myself is a level 66 Night Elf Druid!" panic.

Today, however, I felt just great, and continue to do so. So first of all, I just want to acknowledge that, and put it up here so that the next time I'm biking along, feeling like crap I may remember it. Secondly, I wanted to speculate on possible reasons to the recovery of cheer:
