2006-02-01What do you make of this? The latest woot description involved the words "neosemantic paradigm", and I wanted to know if they were real words or not, so I turned to my friend Google (as my friend Katya was otherwise engaged). Google gave me this: "Not A Good document to read". I wonder what you make of it. Myself, I'm confused.
It seems to be a bunch of disparate texts all sharing page space, with banners for "Union High School... more->URLAdd Comment?Edit?
2006-01-27"The Anti-Krusty"In case you don't read Metafilter obsessively, there was a thread there this morning about this amazing piece in the Washington Post. The piece is about a children's entertainer called the Great Zucchini, and it's really, really good.
2006-01-24Ok. No more spending, I mean it.This is the last of the Holiday-season, I-have-all-the-money-I-need, crazy spending bash. I'd rather not say how much my new boots were... but they seem worth it.
Also, this will be the first time that I've bought boots before my old boots (quite literally) fell off of my feet. In fact, the last two times that I've bought boots, the old ones had already falled off, and... more->URLAdd Comment?Edit?
2006-01-23We're in this thing to win – let's act like it!I'm a recent convert to woot.com, although I have yet to buy. If you aren't familiar with the service, they are an internet-only retail store, but they only sell one product. That product changes every day, is (apparently) completely random, and is usually wicked cheap. One day they were selling pairs (you had to buy two) of these toasters with automatic bagel-slicing attachments. I didn't want one (let a... more->URLAdd Comment?Edit?
2006-01-17Maybe I don't need new boots all that much...I was saving up to buy those new boots... but maybe my money could be better spent on other things. (in case the link there dies, the IL State Auction is auctioning off a zamboni. $200, currently.
2006-01-16PataphorAnother post about something someone said on Metafilter. In the context of a discussion about pataphors, which are apparently an extension of Jarry's idea of pataphysics (the natural extention of metaphysics) someone postedx a link to this. It is flash. It might have sound, I don't know, but it's safe ... more->URLAdd Comment?Edit?
2006-01-13Just thought I'd mentionThat over on Metafilter there is a huge thread in which everyone is debating Billy Collins, one of my favorite poets. I think it's cool as hell that there is so much excitement over there about poetry, and there have been some really good posts.
Someone links to a poem that I quite like. Actually, reading a bit more of it, I find that I like it exceedingly well. It demands of us, "... more->URLAdd Comment?Edit?
2006-01-13Two theories...On the one hand, it may be that I'm just constantly pushing the boundaries, trying to become strange enough that someone will finally tell me "That's enough", like a rebellious teenager. That seems like the depths of foolishness.
One the other hand, maybe I've finally come to realize that there are no boundaries, and I should be ruled only be my own counsel and not by fear of what other people may think. That seems more like the height of wisdom, really.
Katya and I got to see (most of*) The Magic Flute at the Lyric Opera last night. Hooray! It was very good, and quite different from my other Lyric experience--Wagner.
2006-01-10Dense LiteratureAmazon.com tells me that the Brothers Karamzaov (one book among many in my partner's extremely ambitious reading list) has over 14,000 words per ounce. I think that is fantastic.URLAdd Comment?Edit?
2006-01-06In other news...Now I really want to get myself a Demi Gorget and Pauldron.
2006-01-06The right Men for the job...So Katya and I just watched Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring again recently (Katya watched it twice actually, it's like a fuzzy blanket with extra elves) and it got me thinking about a couple of things.
So Sauron has this ring, right? On the one hand, if he got it back it would magnify his power immensely, making conquest a piece of cake. Dark, evil cake, but slightly moist and covered in good butter-cream icing. (Not only that, but he'd have a tongue again, for the first time in a tho... more->URLAdd Comment?Edit?
2006-01-051G PPC6700 Apache... Shuffle!!For Christmas I got gift cirtificates to Best Buy from Katya's folks and from Triton College, which was cool. So the other night, to wrap up a fury of spending post-christmas capital (a fury that will only truly abate after I acquire new boots) I went to the store in question and purchased a One Gig* mini-SD storage card for my phone. Woot, Woot!
2006-01-03Favorite Memories from Aught-FiveKatya and I went to a New Year's Eve party, but we didn't really know anyone there, so we left around 10:00 and bought a bottle of champagne. Then we sat on the couch and toasted all of our favorite memories. Here's a selection:
Reading Pooh to each other.
Seeing Wagner's Ring cycle at the Lyric.
Going to the Green Zebra for Valentine's Day
I made a four-course dinner for us for our aniversary.
2006-01-03Just so I'm clear...New diet, from January 3rd through March 3rd, with an exception for St. Valentine's day. I'm swearing off:
Soda with calories
All sweets (whatever that means... kind of like Art, I know it when I see it)
Things with a lot of cheese (pizza, whole blocks of Gouda, &c.)
Eggnog. More's the pity.
That, combined with (hopefully) going to the gym three times a week. I went this morning, for the first time since November, and it was great. So we'l... more->URLAdd Comment?Edit?
