Firefly
I don't seem to have too much time to write about Things of late--I'm too busy playing with the Earth. At any rate, sometime I'll add my voice to the millions of screaming fangirls who conclude that Firefly is ohmygodtehshit! and maybe explain why it's so good.
Even though Mal reminds me all to strongly of my former fencing coach, about whom I am deeply ambivilant.

This is so cool.
So, I'm posting this from a small café near my house. Just thought you'd like to know.

WOOT!!
This thing is awesome! so, as you may have guessed, I'm writing this post on my new phone. In bed.
It's a tiny computer--I spent all day yesterday walking back and forth around campus getting signatures for this grant, and the whole time I was listening to mp3s. On my phone.
Another really nice thing about this phone is that it's a free pass directly to Tier 2 tech support at Sprint. I called in to get the internet installed on this thing, and as soon as the person heard the magic words "... more->

The Problem of Pronouns
I got the Uber-Phone, but I'm waiting until the web stuff is enabled so my first real post about it can be made from it. In the meantime:
I've often wondered how to deal with gender-queer folk and pronouns. Ok, I obsessivly worry about it every day. At any rate, one technique that I've heard of, but never tried, is simply to switch pronouns at every opportunity. The end result, I find, is not as confusing as I feard. For me, at least, it simple drives home the point that they are completely arbitra... more->

Speaking of Batman
My boss said it was great, far exceeding her expectations. Her poster-ready quotes was, "It's not entirely stupid." which sounds like damning with faint praise, but apparently she really liked it.
This gives me a good feeling about the film:
Before the shooting began, Christopher Nolan invited the whole film crew to a private screening of Blade Runner (1982). After the film he said to the whole crew, "This is how we're going to make Batman."

Action Movies
I'm going to see Batman Begins on Friday, and am very excited by the idea. I love action movies. Well, to be precise, I am afraid of non-action movies. Action movies are designed to blow things up. The hero (who is almost always male, but who is rarely necessarily so) has to shoot a bunch of people and engage in some sort of acrobatic sequence while exciting music plays. End of story, go home.

Nathan's Wedding
One of my very best friends throughout high school is getting married (which is weird) in August, and I'll be attending. He just sent me this letter, from which I will quote the amusing passage:
"If you can attend, and are comfortable with being an attendant, the dress code is as follows: Black suit, white shirt, black tie...
Aside from these vague restrictions in dress, I will trust everyone’s ability to choose their own suit and any other specific details around their dress. <... more->

Alcohol will break you.
So there were these three guys on the train tonight. There was a youngish bald guy, an older, slightly overweight guy, and another older, exceedingly drunk guy.
The older, overweight guy was speaking very loudly, especially for an El car at 11:00 at night. He was insisting that alcohol was very bad for you. "Alcohol will fuck you up," he warned, "Alcohol will break you." I decided that he must have been recently kicked out of his monastery, because he was gobstruck at the vast amounts of alcohol th... more->

Unleashed
And perhaps Katya and everyone else was wrong about Unleashed... well, Rober Ebert liked it, anyway. He makes it sound like a really interesting movie:
This is a story that could have made a laughable movie. That it works is because of the performances of Jet Li and Bob Hoskins, who plays his master...

1602
Yesterday was a very stressful day, indeed. Not a very interesting one, so I wont' go into why it was so stressful (grants, work, budgets, &c.). At the end of the day I thought I'd go see Unleashed, with Jet Li, because that was the only movie that I wanted to see but that I knew Katya had no interest in. Well, it turns out that no one else did, either--Unleashed is no longer in theatres.
But that's not the point. The point is that I went to the Comic Shop and bought Neil Gaiman's 1602. I re... more->

With Gretchen Helfrich
I just realized that I could listen to NPR at work! Odyssey at noon and Fresh Air at 11:00 were the absolute high points of my day when I worked at Chicago Spotlight, and I've really missed them.

Pornography
Long Story Short: Porn is bad, and so is Baz Luhrmann. Long, ranty.
Pornography is, loosely defined, any media created with the ultimate goal of sexual arousal--I think that's a pretty safe definition. On the face of it that's not so bad, after all being sexually aroused is often very pleasant. The trouble with pornography is that by its nature it can only be interested in producing a single state of mind--Lust. Cognition, reason and analysis are not necessary (and usually just get in the way) to a... more->

Debt Fun!
I just paid my bills again, I get such a kick out of that! Every two weeks I am reminded that I have a job, and I can pay everyone what they ask for, and still have money left! I always feel a little ecstatic after paying bills... checking off every column as "paid", doing little calculations, comparing money spent this month to money spent last...
There were so many months recently where I just picked some bills at random and paid them, because I didn't have close to enough money ... more->

CSS
Ok, so CSS2 can't seem to make a decent two-column layout (gurus, please correct me on this!) without resorting to javascript hacks. What can it do?
Well, this page also uses javascript, but nothing else. It is pure HTML + CSS + Javascript. It is amazing. (Works in firefox, works not even a little bit in IE. YMMV).
Ok, here's an example of the sort of thing that one can do with CSS. Click ... more->

Black Magic
I don't know. I have no idea. Anyway, I put in some black magic javascript (and I had just removed all of the black magic css, too!) that matches up the height of both of the columns (From DevArticles) and it seems to be working in FireFox. Upon further consideration, it seems that somehow it isn't needed in IE, because IE was already working... maybe. We'll see how it looks next month, w... more->

Blargh, CSS2
I'm mainly adding this post so that the column of blog entries will be longer than the column with the sidebar in it. However, I'll also use this to register a plea to any CSS geeks out there:
How the Hell do I set up a simple two-column-plus-header format??? Like:

Site may look crappy for a while...
So when I first put this together I stole all of the css, not to mention the design itself, from Blogger. In other words, I slapped in a whole bunch of crap that I didn't even try to understand with the idea that once it was all working I'd go bak in and fix it up.
Six months later, the time has come. I managed to fix up the comments section, but I still have to do that main page and the side bar... and when I start on the side bar,... more->

Half man, half wolf, he must trace his past and save his sister???
While working on "Walsung with Bears" I happened across the spoilers for a video game of the Ring cycle. Yes, a video game based on the Opera. Well, loosely based, I suppose. How loosely? Well, you can play one of four characters. Loge and Alberich seem reasonable, but you can also play as these two:
- Brunnhilde, the Walkyrie. Fleeing the wrath of her father becau... more->

Well... _I_ think it's funny.
If you don't get it, you just haven't read enough Seuss, haven't heard enough Wagner, or you just aren't as cool as I am.
That rascal Siegfried's not right in the head,
Maybe because both his parents are dead.
When he's not being violent or putting on airs
He threatens to feed poor old Mime to the bears!
