May Mountaineering Madness!
Photos available here
Four or five years ago, Brooke, Fuzzy and I went camping in New York... but we realized that we could either have an ok time in a camp site, or we could pool our money and rent a hotel room and really relax. The hotel room was air-conditioned. Last year Katya and I went camping for my birthday--one of my favorite vacations ever. We swam in Lake Superior, we cooked fake sausage and corn in ... more->

Destroying the Earth is harder than you may have been led to believe.
The Top 10 Ways to Destroy the Earth, which I saw (as did you, no doubt) on metaFilter.
It's a thoughtful list of the ten most feasible plans for removing the planet from existance. Note that this is not a list of how to kill all life on Earth, as "[t]here are far more efficient ways of doing this, many which are available and feasible right now."
They are ranked in order of pr... more->

Thor meets Captain America
From the Afterword to David Brin's excellent short story :
The parallel-world story is another mainstay of SF. It explores the old question: "What would have happened if...?"
If a fly buzzing above a bowl of soup had dipped too low, getting caught, disgusting a Roman centurion, who took his wrath out on an underling, sending him out on an extra patrol, which detected Hannibal's army in the Alps early enough to catch it far from Rome..... more->

I've been playing Exquisite Corpse for a while, now. I just discovered this, however (requires Flash, has sound). Someone made a square image, which then acts as the center of a 3x3 grid of images that all flow (theoretically) seamlessly out of it. That three by three uber-image then becomes the center for the next level of images, and so on. The image is currently 2279... more->

Vader is so unpredictable...
Hedonistica led me to this, which you have probably already seen:
Darth Vader is reading my mind with the help of the Burger King King. That's crazy, man.

Kingdom of Heaven
There is a common stereotype that Communists have no sense of humor, and I often know how they feel. I seems a little sad, sometimes, that I get so bothered by the treatment of women in a Vin Diesel movie that it casts a shadow over the whole film. I mean, there were basically no women in Triple-X (the first one), and they were only present (and objectified) for a couple of scenes, but that's what I think of when I think of that movie. Well, that and the fact that Vin wore a sheep on his back the whole time... more->

I must obtain this phone.
Ok, so I've had my Samsung i300 for about three years now, and I've been dropping it once every three months or so. Apparently there is a limit to the number of times that one can do this, and that limit is 12. Or something like that, because when I dropped it again on Friday the screen said, "Memory Page Hand Thing Error: Reset?" and wouldn't reset no matter what I ... more->

Six-Month Review
I don't usually want to write about my job here, but I just had a wonderful six-month review. Dedre said all sorts of really nice things about me, which was really good to hear. I'm still pretty indebted to her, considering my position before she hired me, and how much I love working here.
I thanked her for hiring me, and she said, "Smartest thing I ever did" which, while probably not strictly true, made me feel all warm and what-not.

K to the I to the L and the T!
Sorry to have been silent here for so long, I've been busy. I have a kilt now, though! Woot! Sometime I'll post photos.
Utilikilts, the company that made it, promises, "We sell Freedom." It is certainly freeing. It took me a little while to get used to the feel of fresh air against my bare legs, and it still sometimes feels like I'm in that "forgot my pants in high school" dream. It's worked out pretty well, however. I'm not sure how well I'll like it come ... more->

Tech Week
No entries because Tech Week at Triton. As usual I'm pessimistic about my lighting, and convinced that this time they'll fire me. As of last night, though, things looked pretty ok and the director was kind.
The last show was kind of close to Art--you can quibble about the quality, but clearly I was communicating something--but this show is much more about Utility. And maybe utility can be art if you're talking about pottery or something, but I'm dissapointed that my lighting design merely serves ... more->
