2005-04-29 Announcement I tried swearing off sweets over Lent, and it worked out really well, so I'm going to do it again. I'm officially swearing off sweets from May 1st (so I can have some of Katya's birthday cake, and a piece of Wh's Baklava) until July 1st (in time to have some of my own cake).

We'll see how that goes.

2005-04-27 Low-Down Nerdy Shame Really interesting post on Plethorax about gamers and shame, in which ey compares modern gaming culture to homosexuality in the 1890's. There certainly is that sense that a lot of my friends are all, Hey, look at the losers play dungeons and dragons until the instant they step through the door, and then the Doritos and four-sided dice come out and suddenly they're all, "Did I ever tell you about my half-druid spi... more->

2005-04-27 Why Words Hurt I helped to organize a colloquium by Dr. Jonathan Schooler, from the University of British Columbia. It was fascinating.

Schooler was talking about verbal overshadowing. Here's the basic scenario: Person A sees a bank robber, go to the police station, and participate in a line up, trying to identify the crook. Person B sees the same robbery, but gives a detailed verbal description to the police before participating in the line up. Contrary to what one might expect, person B is much less likely to... more->

2005-04-25 Before you die, you see the Ring Cycle. Warning: Long, feministy. Really just long, though.

First things first: the opera. It's been a week now, time to write about it. Katya and I saved our money (a dollar bill every day, into the cigar box we called "The Opera Box". When we couldn't afford a dollar, we put in an IOU. When we couldn't afford that, we took out a dollar and put in two IOUs) for over a year, and we were able to buy tickets to the Lyric Opera's production of the Ring of the Nibelung.

Before last week I'd seen two... more->

2005-04-19 From Memepool Dr. Masaru Emoto, Japanese scientist and author of the best- selling books "Messages from Water" (translated into twenty languages and over one million copies sold) and "The Hidden Messages in Water", is a long-time advocate for peace in relation to water. His research has visually captured the structure of water at the moment of freezing, and through high-speed photography Dr. Emoto has shown the direct consequences of destructive thoughts or, alternately, the thoughts of love and appreciation on the forma... more->

2005-04-19 CogSci 2005 So, I really want to go the the Annual Meeting of the Cognitive Science Society. Mainly because it's in Milan and (as if that's not incentive enough) Milan is not too far from Bologne, where Umberto Ecco teaches. I'd bet two dollars that he'll be there, and I could get his autograph on "The Island of the Day Before". (Yeah, I know you didn't like it, and I know you prefer the Name if the Rose because of Sean Connery. Everyone does. I still like the Island).

Anyway, I just saw this, and now I r... more->

2005-04-18 I'll write about the opera sooner or later... I just saw The Ring, all 18 hours of it. I want to write about it, but it was so _big_ that I don't really have time to do it properly. I will, though. For now... Ooh, look, Flying cars!

2005-04-05 The Semantic Overloading of Love So, this was my contribution to our recent Symposium. Fortunately none of those present knew anything about Greek, so no one could contradict my assertions. I bet I'm wrong, but it doesn't really matter.

2005-04-05 Four hours, Eleven People, Six Bottles. Love! So we decided to have a Symposium at our house on Saturday. We gave everyone two months notice, and everyone seemed really enthusiastic, but I was still more than I little worried. The idea of inviting people over just to talk, and to have a pre-determined topic of conversation, and to even ask people to prepare things in advance... Well, that's weird.
