In addition to the gender equality of theater, I was surprised by how many other aspects of call were familiar to me. Even though the last professional theater I sat foot in was 700 miles away, and not a single person there even went to the same college as the people I worked with on Wednesday, it felt like old times. The particular inflexion in the master carp's voice as he called, 'Carpenters...' allowed me to mentally finish with 'take a break' seconds before he said it. There was a carpenter who (for reasons to complicated for me to get into) could have been an exact replica of a woman I worked with in Boston, or of a woman I worked with in North Carolina. It's good to be back.
